What happens during a facial appointment at Monastery?
Your appointment at Monastery starts with a short skin consultation, moves into a hands-on cleanse, exfoliation, massage, mask, and finishing serums, then closes with tailored home-care notes. Expect roughly an hour of quiet, deliberate work in our San Francisco studio at 4175 24th St, focused on the skin you actually have today.
How should I arrive and what happens in the first ten minutes?
Come with clean-ish skin if you can, but don't stress about makeup. We remove it anyway. When you walk in, we'll offer water, take a seat with you, and ask what's been going on with your skin lately. Sleep, stress, sun, new products, hormones, travel. All of it matters more than a checklist of "skin type."
A common scenario: someone books thinking they need aggressive exfoliation for congestion. We look under the lamp and see a compromised barrier instead. That changes the whole session. Less acid, more repair. This is where honest intake beats a fixed menu, and it's why we treat the first ten minutes as part of the treatment.
Most people ask first how many steps the facial has. Wrong first question. Ask what the esthetician will skip if your skin isn't ready for it. A good facial is subtractive as often as it's additive [1].
What does the treatment itself feel like?
Quiet. Warm. Slower than you'd expect. We work in layers, and each layer has a job.
- We double-cleanse with a rose-based oil to lift sunscreen, sebum, and pollution without stripping the barrier.
- We exfoliate using either a gentle enzyme or a glycolic gel, chosen the moment we see your skin under magnification.
- We perform manual extractions only where the skin is soft and ready, never forced.
- We massage the face, neck, and décolleté using a facial oil, working lymphatic points to reduce puffiness.
- We apply a treatment mask matched to the day's concern, whether that's hydration, calming, or brightening.
- We finish with serum, moisturizer, and mineral SPF if you're heading back into daylight.
You may hear tools. A gua sha stone, a warm towel, sometimes red LED. None of it should hurt. If anything stings past a few seconds, say so. We adjust.
How is a Monastery facial different from a quick spa facial?
Not every facial is the same product with a different price tag. Here's how a few common formats compare, so you can pick what actually fits your skin goal.
| Format | Typical length | Best for | When to skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express facial | ~30 min | Maintenance between deeper treatments | Active breakouts or irritation |
| Full bespoke facial | ~60-75 min | Barrier repair, congestion, dullness | The week of a peel or laser |
| At-home ritual | 15-20 min, 2x weekly | Sustaining results between visits | Replacing pro extractions |
Athena Hewett founded Monastery after 20 years as a master esthetician, and the studio is 100% independently owned. That independence matters here. We formulate and source the products we use on you, so there's no upsell to a brand we don't stand behind. If you want to think through fit before booking, our guide on choosing the right specialist walks through the questions worth asking any esthetician, not just ours.
What should I do after the appointment?
Go easy for 24 hours. Skip the gym that night, skip retinol, skip acids, skip hot yoga. Your skin has been cleaned, exfoliated, and freshly fed. Let it settle.
Try this: take a photo in daylight the next morning. Not for social. For yourself. You'll see texture and tone shifts that are easy to miss in the bathroom mirror. Book your next visit around your skin cycle, roughly every four to six weeks for most people, closer to eight if you're mostly maintaining [2].
If a small breakout shows up two days later, that's usually purge from extractions clearing, not a reaction. Call us. We'll talk you through it.
FAQ
Do I need to arrive with a bare face?
No. Come as you are. We'll double-cleanse at the start of the session, which is part of the treatment. If you're wearing heavy makeup or SPF, it just means the first cleanse works a little harder. That's fine.
How long is a typical facial appointment?
Plan on about 60 to 75 minutes for a full bespoke facial, plus 10 minutes on either side for consultation and check-out. Express formats run around 30 minutes. If it's your first visit, give yourself an extra buffer so you're not rushing in or out.
Will extractions hurt?
They shouldn't. We only extract where the skin is soft and prepped, and we stop the moment the skin says no. Some pressure is normal. Sharp pain isn't. Tell us in the moment and we'll move on. Not every appointment includes extractions, and that's fine.
How do I book an appointment?
Call Monastery at (415) 218-9783 or visit us at 4175 24th St in San Francisco. If you're new, mention it when you book so we can hold time for the intake conversation. First-time guests often find it helpful to read our prep notes for a first visit beforehand.
